Consumer Reports 2013 Top Picks

Two weeks ago Consumer Reports published its 2013 Top Picks. For 2013, the Top Picks list has new winners in seven categories.  Toyota took two of the top picks and Scion took one.

2013 Top Pick Sporty Car = Scion FR-S
2013 Top Pick Green Car = Toyota Prius
2013 Top Pick Midsized SUV = Toyota Highlander

The Consumers Reports Top Picks are as close as it gets to “no-brainers” in the auto market. They’re impressive all-around vehicles, chosen from more than 280 they have recently tested.  All Top Picks must meet Consumer Reports’ stringent criteria in three areas: road test, reliability, and safety. They must rank at or near the top of their category on overall road test scores; they must have earned an average or better predicted-reliability Rating based on problems Consumer Reports subscribers reported on 1.2 million vehicles in the latest survey; and they must perform well if included in crash or rollover tests by the government or the insurance industry.

Here’s what Consumer Reports has to say:

Scion FR-S

If you take your driving fun seriously, the Scion FR-S was built for you. Co-developed by Subaru and Toyota, which builds Scion vehicles, the FR-S is exhilarating to drive, with super-sharp handling, excellent braking, and ample acceleration. Other draws: impressive gas mileage and reasonable sticker price.

Toyota Prius

Sure, today’s electric cars are getting the equivalent of 100 or more mpg. But no current plug-in car can match the Toyota Prius hatchback for its blend of fuel efficiency, practicality, and affordability. Its 44 overall mpg is still the best we’ve measured in any five-passenger, non-plug-in vehicle. And its roomy interior, comfortable ride, and hatchback versatility make it easy to live with. Consumers Reports also gives a thumbs-up to the 41-mpg Toyota Prius V wagon.

Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander is for people who want the practicality of an SUV with the refinement of a good sedan. It provides a quiet, well-finished cabin, as well as a cushy ride, sound handling, and a smooth powertrain. The Highlander has also consistently maintained above-average reliability. The V6 model delivers a competitive 18 mpg overall, and the Highlander Hybrid model tops all SUVs at 27 mpg.
